Romania through my eyes

”That’s all, folks” (or the end of the period when all the unserious people could become millionaires)

It was summer and the traffic was dramatic. 2007 was the year that made even the most suspicious person realise that the traffic in Bucharest is and will remain crazy. The meeting was set at one of the “nice” areas of the city and I went together with a colleague of mine. My driver left us 100 meters away from the meeting point, so we walked a bit (allowing me to pretend that I did some exercise for my extra kilos). As always, I was in suit, with a tie, without being interested in how hot or cold is the atmosphere. We entered in the restaurant, which was recently opened, another one of the [...]

Lessons from SIMA

Why Spain will be one of the key markets for Romanian Real Estate sector Back from Madrid… What an experience was this one! A lovely city and an interesting market were my rewards for choosing to be there. SIMA exhibition can become much better in the future, we have to admit this, but still it had good potential for anyone who has a reason to be present in Spain. The presence of Romania was satisfactory, not only because few companies had stand, but also because the municipality of Bucharest was present there, together with some of the major players of the Real Estate market. The stand of MORE, [...]

Sima becomes more and more interesting…

Buenos Dias from Madrid. I guess that we are cursed this week, as it is the fifth day in a row with clouds and rain. For me this is not a problem at all, but the people around me are a bit upset. The exhibition is more and more interesting. Not in terms of quantity of the visitors in our stand, but definitely in terms of quality. I am also impressed by the number of Romanians who came the last 2 days to us, asking to buy properties back home. On Monday you will have my full report for what happened here and my view to the very interesting Spanish market.

My Speech: A moment to remember

It was raining again, as it happened in all the previous days. But even while raining, Madrid is still lovely. This is why last night I was walking on some of the main boulevards, just to relax and think, after a hard day (ok, I admit it, I was also checking the marketing mix on the high streets of the city). The day was really full: Meetings with some of the top Spanish companies, active in Romanian market, an interesting discussion with the economic counsellor of Romania in Spain, mr Constantin Ene, my speech in the conference, the interesting approach to markets by the other co-speakers, the [...]

With the Ambassador of Romania in Spain – what a surprise…

Yesterday I was telling you about 1 million Romanians living in Madrid. Well I was wrong and I need to apologize to all my thousands of readers. Yesterday I had the honour to welcome in our stand, the stand of MORE International Invest, her Excellency, the Ambassador of Romania in Spain, the Economic Counsellor of Romania and another gentleman from the embassy. They came together with a good friend of mine, Dan Cirstea, owner of the no. 1 advertising company specialized in Real Estate sector, United. Marketing and Partner. During our brief discussion, I asked the Ambassador and she corrected me, [...]

Talking sports in exhibitions – I simply love it

The first time I remember myself watching sports was in the spring of 1979. It was a game between Panionios and Olympiakos for the Greek Cup, two Greek football teams. My family had a black and white television, Olympiakos lost 2 – 1 (Panionios later on won the Cup). I, not even 4 years old, felt sympathy for the one who lost and I became his supporter. Since then and especially since 1982, I have been following almost all the major events, until 2000, when more or less I stopped being so enthusiastic. In International exhibitions you meet people from all over the world. “People who have nothing [...]

“You look like a Turkish man and this is a compliment”

I know that my physique can mislead people. When I travel to England, I am always questioned for 5 – 10 minutes, separately than the rest of my friends, just because they find me Arab… I have been called Italian, Spanish and many more. Yesterday I became a Turkish man too! “You know, mr Ilias, you don’t look like a Greek, you look more like a Turkish man. And this is a compliment”. “Turkish man? Compliment? Ooooooooooooooooooooook…” The guy explained to me that he didn’t have good experience from the Greeks he met in the past and for him me being a Turk is something good. He [...]

Proud… My first interview in Romanian language and more…

Yesterday things were much better than the first day. More people, more interesting meetings, plus some nice surprises. At first, a meeting with one of the top Romanian businessmen in Real Estate, who knew almost EVERYTHING I have written here in this blog! (I can not deny that I like this when it happens, like anyone else who writes his thoughts does). Couple of hours after, there was one of the most important moments in my life the last 4 years: I gave the first interview talking to someone in Romanian language! Honestly, I do not know how I did it, as I can not speak good Romanian (my colleagues [...]
