” If i have the connections, why should i come to you?”

As my… quest for serious people to hire continues, except the endless queue of unserious people who do not appear in the interview (or the ones who agree to work and then they vanish), I also have some interesting ones who come to me. Like a gentleman who I met few days ago. He didn’t have any experience and he wanted to be a real estate agent. When I asked him if he knows what to do, he replied that if he knew what to do, he would not come to me. When I asked him if he understands that he has to be out all day searching for properties, he replied that if he had to be all day out, he would do it for himself, not for me. And the… “knock out answer”… “Ok, you don’t want to go out from the office. How are you going to find the properties? Do you have enough connections for this?”. “I thought I came in a serious company, that has vast number of connections. I thought you had many connections and you can not handle them. If I had the connections, why should I come to you?”

Another lady appeared to me (with a stylish discreet earing in her nose), having applied for assistant manager. She was different but looking like a special person, with a very interesting cv (honestly I have no problem to hire someone who has his personal style, as long as there is nothing weird in it. I always believe that someone who is not like me, he can possibly bring to our company new ideas and a different perception of things). Having in my background many years in media and journalism, I always appreciate someone who was editor in chief for years. So, I started with the most positive mood that you can imagine. But, it wasn’t meant to be…
She was not really interested in working with me, I guess she needed more to describe to me her situation. Our… “love” died really young: I asked her 3 times one question (why she wants to work in Real Estate, as she didn’t try so far), she gave me 3 times irrelevant answers (“I want to see if I will find a good job before the deadline to go and work abroad” etc) and the last time I asked her again, she informed me that I don’t have any connections in Romania (correct, I did transactions of 350 million euro by the help of my good luck), that my English is very bad (tell me something new) and that the leaflet with the profile of my company must change. After she “killed” me with her words, feeling really proud of herself, she stood up, said something which I didn’t understand (and I prefer not to find out) and she left my office. Downstairs there was a man waiting her, who she ordered to follow her out. And I? I remained alone, crying for losing my last opportunity to correct the mistakes of my company’s profile (or at least she hoped for this).

Last but not least, in this endless sequence of the “interesting” people I meet… A gentleman who came for an interview 40 minutes before the football game of Romania with France, yesterday (because more than 20% of my readers come from USA, I remind you that football for us in Europe your soccer). He works in a multinational company for 4 years, this was one of the reasons I wanted to meet him. In 3 minutes after he arrived, he went to my assistant and asked her if I will delay a lot, because he wanted to leave so as to watch the game. But if he wanted to watch the game, why didn’t he tell us to arrange the interview for another day? Of course I released him very fast from the obligation of discussing seriously for his career and life, actually who am I to compare with Cristian Chivu? (For any foreigner who doesn’t know, he is the captain of the Romanian team, an excellent player, beloved by most of the women in Romania and Italy and the people who know him talk about a fantastic character, a really good person). But…
Isn’t it a pity to see someone who presents himself as professional and wants to work in a multinational company, to arrive for an interview, asking to leave fast? How is it possible for him to be respected by a potential new boss with this behavior? Why doesn’t he respect himself? Big discussion…

I love this blessed place and some of its inhabitants, who never stop trying hard so as to surprise me…
