Romania through my eyes

Poor Greece – Rich Greeksand Romania follows…

(part 1) Why Greece ended like this? Today we all read the problems of Greek economy. The World’s top media cover the “Greek tragedy” every single day, presenting a country which is ready to bankrupt, doubting for the good intentions of the new Government, approaching the problem just by touching its surface. The same surface that “looked ok” during the previous years, while the country was heading fast to today’s wreck. Let us try to identify the reality under the surface, always keeping in mind that Greeks and Romanians are 80% alike (in my opinion). And if Greece’s tragedy does not wake [...]

Real prices are NOT the asked pricesCan you finally get it?

It looks like my yesterday’s post created some anger out there. Lots of you got upset because I presented the situation as it is (and when some people don’t have arguments, the easy way to reply is to attack me about Greece! So sweet…). Many others consider that the bottom is not reached yet, as there are too many owners out there asking for crazy prices. Finally, plenty of owners cursed me because I did not announce that the prices will explode again. Let’s read couple of emails which describe exactly this kind of “feelings”… So, someone with the name “Marian” wrote to me yesterday: “Greece, [...]

Looks like we reached it, welcome to the “rock bottom”

During the period 2004 – 2007, we could observe prices rising on every day of every week. During this “race” a friend of mine used to call me every month. After the usual pleasantries, his only real question would eventually emerge: “So, Mr Romanian… do you people still climb over there?” He was referring to the prices… “Where are you now? At what height?” Being Greek, and coming from Katerini which is very close to (the famous) mountain of Olympus , my replies were always describing landmarks of the mountain. In the beginning I was talking about the roots, then I went up and up… it was 2008 [...]

Tips about buying new apartments:1. Bad quality of construction

Investment in a new apartment is one of the most important moments in the economic life of everyone of us. Statistics say that we usually buy 1 – 3 dwellings during our life, so every mistake counts. There are tens of people I know who bought an apartment in new block. Unfortunately for 30% of them, when they received their new home, their feelings were ranging between despair and anger. Very bad quality of finishings, many structural problems, several lies comparing to the promised quality. The result: They had to invest some extra 5.000 – 30.000 euro, in order to fix the mess, if it could be [...]

10 + 1 reasons why Romanians LOVE Real Estate

Hello to everyone. I hope that all of you will celebrate this day, Valentine’s day, in the best way you desire, together with the one you wish. Today I would like to share with you a few words about why so many millions of people in this country are so passionate about Real Estate. More or less, I could tell you 10 + 1 reasons, as I perceive them through my business activity during the last 6 years here. I can also add the feedback of the hundreds of people I know and the result is something like this: 1. Every Romanian wants to have his own property. He feels more secure (exactly like the Greeks. [...]

Yesterday’s bad news for World Economy and my analysis on 18.11.2009

Did you hear the news yesterday? Germany did not exit the problems, as they were telling to us some months ago, but they are still stuck into crisis, ending the year with 0 real growths. Many other countries of Europe follow the same direction, reminding to everyone that the better times will not come soon and for sure they will not come without more effort… If you remember, I had written to you an analysis about 2010. It was November 2009 and it was part of my overall analysis regarding Romania and 2010. You can check out the whole text here: http://http://www.iliaspapageorgiadis.ro/english/romania-2010-do-we-really-wantto-reach-bottom-and-stop-falling/   The [...]

“I count only up to 20”“Then how will you count 280.000 euro?”

(part 3, for part 1 please press here, for part 2 please press here) Beware of the Greeks… Finally she found the solution. She invited a cousin of hers, “who went to the lyceum for 2 years” to come over and help. Thank God, this guy knew how to use a calculator. At 15.20 we had finished counting. And the next issue was how to carry the money until the notary’s office (who was calling every 30 minutes to ask what is going on, with the lady replying – shouting “we count, mister, we count”). The lady proposed to take the bag with the money and bring it there. The same did my client. “No no no… [...]
