17:35 – While G20 leaders discuss the expulsion of Greece from the Eurozone, George Papandreou does not quit, but confirms to his ministers: “No more referendum”
Ten minutes ago the summit of Greek ministers ended, with the Prime Minister, George Papandreou, refuses to resign. Mr. Papandreou is quoted to have said to his ministers that “we had to ask for a referendum, as the opposition did not want to vote for the new agreement. It is very important that they finally accepted it and now we can move forward. Even if we don’t go to the referendum anymore, we can still find a common ground of discussion with them”.
The Greek Prime Minister does not intend to quit. Except for Mr. Andreas Loverdos, Minister of Health, no minister has opposed his decisions. Mr. Loverdos told to the Prime Minister that his decision for the referendum was a very big mistake and insisted that this has to be withdrawn.
Right now, the socialists and the conservatives, the two most important political parties of Greece, are said to have an informal discussion. Reports say that the socialists Dimitris Reppas and Nikos Athanasakis have sat at the same table with the conservatives Kostas Tasioulas and Giannis Michalekis, trying to form a government. Socialist ministers declared that they are against a government of technocrats, while conservative leader, Mr. Antonis Samaras, wants exactly the opposite.
While the summit of the socialist members of the Parliament is about to start, rumors from Cannes say that the G20 summit is discussing scenarios of expelling Greece from the Eurozone. This evening and this night will be the longest ones in the recent Greek history…
PS. At least the referendum will be canceled and the two major political parties, together with another 2, will vote for the agreement with the troika.
