Hiring people (in Real Estate):Does it remain a “Mission Impossible”?

This article was published on 14.04.2010 Things have not changed a lot I can not claim that I noticed things changing a lot in the field of hiring personnel during the first quarter of 2010. I see so many people who don’t know (sometimes not even the basics) and they want to be hired asking so much, as if they knew. Some others know but they don’t seem determined to work, they would rather prefer to find a peaceful job, behind a laptop, with a good salary (“and we see what the future brings us”). I also saw several candidates who simply don’t respect their word. Either they did not appear at all, [...]

“Mister Ilias, I will resign, I can not work after 18.00, my boyfriend doesn’t allow me”

A really successful businessman… (All time classic, 14.10.2008) Sunday afternoon, in Radu Beller area, Bucharest. The coffee places are half full, thus lots of parking lots are available. A young guy leaves, driving his Maybach (I guess he wanted to feel more secure, this is why he bought a 600.000 euro car – hopefully not by leasing…) and now there are three available parking places. Two seconds after, a big Mercedes illegally turns left and now it stands in front of the three parking plots. After mature thought (I guess), the driver chooses to reject all three and park his car exactly [...]

Top 5 behaviors of 2009 “If you don’t like how I will work, go back to your country”

My old office had a major advantage, which I admit that I did not exploit enough: A wonderful garden located in the back of it. At the beginning of the summer it was blooming, with the wonderful smells of flowers invading in the conference room. “Mr Ilias, these are the cvs of the candidates for today’s interviews”. I opened the folder and took in my hands the cvs of 8 persons. “A cv”, I thought, “a simple paper for some people, but very few realize how important it is… A progress of a lifetime described in few lines… and these lines can change someone’s future”. “Reports” were attached [...]

“I want an English teacher” – “Teaching should be done exclusively in English?”

I have made an account at Linkedin.com. It has proved to be very good, as I have met many serious people, did lots of business and I have seriously increased the circle of my friends here in Romania (and not only). Soon I will write to you more about networking sites and this one especially, but today this is not my point… Last week I decided to offer to my colleagues English lessons, so as to help them improve their level (making sure that all of them will know better than me…). For this reason I have placed an announcement at several groups, where I am member: “Searching for an English [...]

” If i have the connections, why should i come to you?”

As my… quest for serious people to hire continues, except the endless queue of unserious people who do not appear in the interview (or the ones who agree to work and then they vanish), I also have some interesting ones who come to me. Like a gentleman who I met few days ago. He didn’t have any experience and he wanted to be a real estate agent. When I asked him if he knows what to do, he replied that if he knew what to do, he would not come to me. When I asked him if he understands that he has to be out all day searching for properties, he replied that if he had to be all day out, he would [...]

I am sad….I am happy

I am sad It is really very disappointing to find out every day that there is a serious part of the Romanians today who behave so wrong when it comes to discuss about work. These people… aren’t they tired applying for jobs and when we call them for an interview they say to my assistant “why do you call me? Who gave you my number?”??? How is it possible to shake hands with someone and agree to work together and then to disappear, not answering to phones? Why did you shake the hand then? What is the seriousness that your words have? How can you beg someone to hire you, telling him that you [...]

“How do you expect to be taken seriously?”

The distinguished gentleman who was sitting opposite me was pretending that he is sooo cool. But he was not. He was nervous, I could read it on his body language. He was not nervous like a lady I met the previous week, who “had feelings” because she felt stress being interviewed in a big company. For him the problem was different… That day I was really late in all my afternoon meetings. I had a contract between a major greek company and one of the best Romanian owners I have ever met. Civilized people, great atmosphere, good intention and logic were the ingredients of this deal. Although [...]
