Romania through my eyes

What is the link between Pinocchio and the Romanian Real Estate world?

Hello from Cannes. I arrived today in the morning, after a small.. adventure with my flights. (No, I will not complain. The problem was caused by Alitalia and the airport of Rome, so everything is ok. Of course, if the same issue would have been caused by Tarom and Otopeni airport, I know lots of foreigners and even more Romanians who would start their stories with “what do you expect? This is Romania…”) Never mind. We finished with the preparations and we are ready to start working at the exhibition tomorrow morning! But as I was walking through the small streets around [...]

Hiring people (in Real Estate):Does it remain a “Mission Impossible”?

This article was published on 14.04.2010 Things have not changed a lot I can not claim that I noticed things changing a lot in the field of hiring personnel during the first quarter of 2010. I see so many people who don’t know (sometimes not even the basics) and they want to be hired asking so much, as if they knew. Some others know but they don’t seem determined to work, they would rather prefer to find a peaceful job, behind a laptop, with a good salary (“and we see what the future brings us”). I also saw several candidates who simply don’t respect their word. Either they did not appear at all, [...]

“The market is going up, haven’t you noticed?”

This article was published on 29.07.2010 Real Estate summer stories July is about to expire soon and August is not expected to be a very “active” month for deals and transactions (ah… where are the good years of 2004 – 2007, when we had our best periods during summers…) More or less, we have read “the script” of this summer’s market. Things have remained unchanged. Prices are not the only ones having a downwards trend. The same happens with people’s mood, income and expectations for the future. this article was published on 29.07.2010 Let me share with you some of my experiences so far, [...]

Bucharest in 1909:The city, the streets, people, habits

Part 2 To read part 1, please press here. Can you believe that 100 years ago shoes and boots were a luxury which not every citizen living in Bucharest could afford to buy. They were wearing some “street shoes” and during cold weather a sort of cheap boots which were made by “street cobblers “. From here we have the expression “with stiff” which is something refined, something that not everyone else owns. The socks were also not so cheap, only those with “well fare” could afford to buy sock from a “store”, but most of common people were weaving their own sock at home or they were wearing [...]

Bucharest in 1909:The city, the streets, people, habits

Part 1 I received an e-mail from a friend with pictures and information about the old Bucharest and i would like to share it with you. Were the inhabitants of Bucharest from a century ago, our grandparents, other than we are?  Were the city streets different? Sure they were, but no better and no worse than today –  as we speak of two different eras. We will try to reconstruct something of the old atmosphere of Bucharest. 1909, the capital had seven times less inhabitants than it has now, respectively only 300,000 which is less than today’s population of the Constanța town. The city occupied [...]

Client asks: “Why do the Real Estate agents treat us with fite?”

This article was published on 11.03.2010 I have been telling you many times that the market will not revive if we continue to be the same ones we were, doing the same mistakes. I also never stop stressing that the main principal should be: “Client is the King”. But even now, during this major crisis, it looks like people don’t change. I have received several messages by investors who feel disappointed by the behavior of the Real Estate agents (or consultants) towards them. I chose this email of a lady who already invested in the market and I will reply to her. “Why do the Real Estate agents treat [...]

The perfect trick: “1 golden coin for 1 coat”

100 years ago, there was a town. Commerce was going well and everything was normal until one Monday during September someone new in the city appeared at the central square and announced: “Whoever brings me one coat, I will pay him with 1 golden coin”. That time a coat’s price was maximum the equivalent of 0,1 golden coin”. People were confused, but some of them returned soon with a coat. They were curious to see what will happen. The unknown man paid them, 1 golden coin for each coat. The whole town started discussing about this. 50 coats were sold… (weekly investment: 50 golden coins) “2 golden [...]

Mr “Goldneck”, a fake “Bentley” and a factory up on Dracula’s hill

(part 2, to read part 1, please press here) “Just 5 minutes drive from here” I turned my head around the square, the central one of this secondary city. So many people passing by, some of them turning their head to see the crazy guy dressed in suit and tie in the middle of the summer. I smiled and I looked at my clock. 11.30 sharp, the time of my meeting. I did not have to wait for long. “Goldneck” appeared soon, making to me signals so as to hurry up and enter in the car. He was driving a quite old Chrysler 300, not recently washed inside. He was together with another gentleman, his unofficial [...]
