So I changed my plans, because I wanted you, my readers, to be among the first ones in the world who will know…

Last night Chancellor Merkel and President Sarkozy decided that Greece should have a referendum by December 4th, with a single question: “Does Greece want to stay in the Euro Zone? Yes or No?”.

Check for more details here.

This is the end of George Papandreou

I was thinking to share with you this title by having a question mark: “The last 48 hours of George Papandreou as prime minister?” but I am sure that he will not make it until Saturday morning. The Greek prime minister committed his last mistake, by accepting to put the country’s future on the gambling table last night. The vice president of his government and minister of economy Vagelis Venizelos already announced that he does not support this decision. “Greece’ s entry in the Eurozone is a historical moment and we cannot put it at risk” he said.

He will not be in this position on Saturday morning

Most probably during the day (Thursday), members of the parliament that belong to the government will withdraw from the governing socialist party, becoming independent and refusing to sustain it. If the prime minister decides to hold on until Friday evening, when his government will ask for a vote of confidence from the parliament, he will not get the majority. I cannot predict when exactly he will be overthrown. But he will not be in this position on Saturday morning.

Which are the two scenarios:

As we speak, there are 2 scenarios:

– Either the government will simply fail to receive a vote of confidence and it will fall on Saturday morning…

– Or the members of the parliament that belong to the socialist party will force the prime minister (and president of the party) to accept a special gathering (today, Thursday or tomorrow Friday), where they will try to remove him by voting against him. In this scenario, Mr. Vagelis Venizelos is the most probable new prime minister, but no one can be sure. Mrs. Anna Diamantopoulou, the actual minister of education is also “warming up”.

In case the socialist party changes its leader before the vote of confidence, we will have a totally new situation, which will resolve the issue for the referendum.

The Greek President of Democracy preparing to give order for a new government?

Then most probably we will have a new government, a special one, for a few days or weeks, whose only goal will be to finalize the agreement with the troika and guarantee the future of Greece IN the Eurozone. Right after this, elections will be held. The option of early elections was on the table since many days ago, but the difference now is that the socialist party will have a different leader, than Mr. Papandreou.

A country’s future is not a dice to throw with

The Greek problem will not be solved 100% by all the above. But it will also not be worsened. Accepting the agreement with the troika will allow Greece to relax a bit and focus on its real target: To reform the country and resolve the structural problems it has, INSIDE Eurozone and European Union. The agreement is not the best one for Greece, but “this is what we have now”.

A country’s future is not a dice to throw with.

By implementing the austerity measures of the agreed package, Greece risks to be in crisis for the next 10 – 15 years.

By exiting the Eurozone, Greece will not just return to Drachma. It might also exit the European Union. And then it will be a country in bankruptcy, alone in the world, trying to remain independent in a difficult environment.

Mr. Papandreou’s days as the prime minister of Greece are over. Greeks have made all kinds of mistakes, but they will not commit suicide as well. And you can take my word to the bank.

UPDATES:

http://www.iliaspapageorgiadis.ro/en/2011/11/03/breaking-news-the-greek-government-lost-the-majority-in-parliament/

http://www.iliaspapageorgiadis.ro/en/2011/11/03/lucas-papademos-kostas-simitis-or-george-papandreou-at-least-greece-is-saved/

http://www.iliaspapageorgiadis.ro/en/2011/11/03/1735-while-g20-leaders-discuss-the-expulsion-of-greece-from-the-eurozone-george-papandreou-does-not-quit-but-confirms-to-his-ministers-no-more-referendum/

I had prepared a different text for the blog today.
