(at least Greece is saved)

The situation in Greece gets more complicated. Right now the ministers’ summit is in progress. The Prime Minister, George Papandreou, is quoted to have started his speech to the ministers by saying: “I had to speak about the referendum, in order to force Mr. Antonis Samaras (leader of the opposition) to become responsible and realize that he cannot just oppose everything”.

While BBC expects him to resign during the following minutes, his supporters – members of the Parliament on Greek television say that he is not over yet. The major difference now is that Mr. Antonis Samaras announced a few minutes ago that he will vote for the new agreement with troika, if this leads to elections right after. “Now that Samaras accepts our policy, the situation changes and the referendum is not needed anymore” friends of the Prime Minister say / leak.

Mr. Samaras proposed this solution, in order for the country to avoid the referendum, to sign the agreement, resolve its basic problems and move ahead. But he still insists on early elections, on December 4th. At the same time some other ministers are reported to promote the solution of Kostas Simitis as interim prime minister, who will sign the agreement and then lead the country to elections. Kostas Simitis is the ex-prime minister of Greece (1996 – 2004) the man who actually succeeded in the country’s entry in the Eurozone.

But if Europeans would choose now, most probably they would vote for Mr. Lucas Papademos. He used to be the Governor of the National Bank of Greece and then became the Vice President of the European Central Bank. This is one of the few Greeks that Europeans trust and, being the right hand of Jean Claude Trichet for so many years, he is considered as the man whose status Greece needs right now.

Mr. Papademos refused to become minister in the past, when Mr. Papandreou proposed it to him, but also to become interim prime minister in the previous crisis of June 15th. Right now he is considered to be the “blessed” one by everyone, where all “mainstream” political parties accept him (communists don’t discuss anything other than the elections and exit from Eurozone and European Union).

To sum up:

· We are waiting for the summit of ministers to finish.

· If Mr. Papandreou accepts to leave, then he will go to the President of Democracy. He will inform him that he will resign and then the President will gather the leaders of the political parties. They will choose a prime minister and then a new government will be formed.

· This new government will obtain the vote of confidence from the parliament, will sign the agreement with the troika and (probably) will prepare the country for elections.

· If Mr. Papandreou refuses to resign, then we should prepare for the “mother of all battles” in the summit of the socialist members of the parliament. There, some members will collect signatures, in order to vote for a new president. Mr. Papandreou will challenge his opponents, telling them that because the agreement will be signed, there is no reason for the government to change.

One thing is clear NOW. Greece is saved. The agreement with the troika will be signed and the major problem will be resolved. Then Greece will head to elections and millions of other minor problems will arise. But the country will remain in the Eurozone.

At the last moment: 2 socialist ministers are heading to the offices of the conservative opposition, in order to start discussions for an interim government, approved by both parties.

TO BE UPDATED

Also today:

http://www.iliaspapageorgiadis.ro/en/2011/11/03/the-last-48-hours-of-george-papandreou-as-prime-minister-referendum-will-not-happen/

http://www.iliaspapageorgiadis.ro/en/2011/11/03/breaking-news-the-greek-government-lost-the-majority-in-parliament/

The situation in Greece gets more complicated.
