Shopping in an almost empty super market

Since I arrived in Romania, back in 2004, the first thing I wanted to identify was people's psychology in every part of their life, shopping as well. In a declared poor country, I was surprised to discover that people's trolleys were full. Throughout the years, Romania's growth was visible in supermarkets as well. In 2008 the trolleys were not only full, but also contained very expensive content. And then crisis brought us back. Today we are probably at the levels of 2005 – 2006. I continue going to supermarkets, studying the prices, trying to identify what their selves say about consumers' life.

In today's world, an investor has endless options to choose from. Initially the type of investment: Bonds, stocks, properties, energy, art or what else? This could easily be compared to the choice of a supermarket: "Gourmet" one, normal, discount or hard discount? Then we should choose the country where we want to invest in. Let us compare the countries with the brands of supermarkets. Let us assume that you chose Real Estateinvestments in Romania… Now it is the time for you to enter in this "supermarket"…

First thing you notice is that there are very few clients inside. There are many more who stay out, thinking about entering or not. You heard that in the past there were queues of people, almost begging to find a product to buy (= to invest). Now the environment is quiet. From time to time you see few more clients (= investors) passing by you, having a trolley or just a basket.

Back in 2008 either the shelves were empty or the prices were very high. Now the variety has increased and you can find almost everything you wish. Prices are lower comparing to the past. Not always very low, but there are also many signs of "special deductions", "sales" or other promotional actions, capturing your sight. Now you just have to check your shopping list, identify what matches with it (and your budget) and move forward.

The place is also cleaner (properties with clear status, approved parameters, legally checked). People have time to clean it up properly, not like in the past when sometimes you could barely see what you were buying. The personnel (Real Estate brokers and consultants) has also been reduced, but the ones who remained are a bit more serious and willing to serve you.

Investing in Romanian Real Estate market during 2010 could easily be compared to shopping in an almost empty supermarket. It is expected to remain like this for the rest of the year as well. Real prices are almost at their lowest level, and they will not start rising any near soon.

Shopping in an empty supermarket is not stressing at all. You take your time before every decision, carefully comparing, reading instructions and expiry dates (= due diligence) and finally buying. Plus during this year you will also have the chance to use credit cards as well (= credit facilities are back in our lives).

Will you take advantage of these conditions or will you wait for "busy" times to shop, at higher prices?

This article is published at the last edition of Tarom's in-flight magazine.

Since I arrived in Romania, back in 2004, the first thing I wanted to identify was people's psychology in every part of their life, shopping as well.
