All the family is together, today I leave for the first part of my vacation, but I still see around me and I get very upset. Many times I complain for the problems and the stupidities I see in Romania, but I always find this country as an example of progress, as a place where things move fast and they improve much more than even the native residents can realize. Back in Greece, dealing with the same problems, with no news for years, I start to be like an old grumpy man. I notice the problems and comment them, making all people around me say the usual new line “yeah, sure, now you are a Romanian, everything is good there and all things here are bad”. But… as I admit that none of my swimming suits fits me after my new kilos since last year, why is it a problem to admit also that I read in my own newspaper (I am the editor of the biggest weekly regional newspaper here in Katerini, but the last years I just have the title) about the same things, same problems, same discussions that I was reading 8 – 10 years ago? Anyway…
Here in Greece we are proud that in the comparison with Beijing we seem to have organized better Olympic Games, especially after it was found out that the opening ceremony last Friday had even recorded fireworks and a play back song by that lovely Chinese little girl. But, in the same time, from the 16 medals we had 4 years ago, so far the first week we had just 2 guys entering in the top 8 and that’s all. Our swimmers were all in the last positions of their competition, 45th among 50 athletes or something like that, but in their interviews they were very happy. Ofcourse, why not? We proved to the world that we know how to swim, nobody got… drowned.
I have with me 3 books to read, but I think that they will be finished in 1 – 1,5 day, as I usually read 60 – 70 pages per hour. That’s why I hope that I will write more posts for this blog, plus I will proceed furthermore with my own book.
See you next week!

You comment – I answer (part 3)

Gabriela Says:
“Very interesting article! Congratulations! I added this blog to my favourites! Indeed, it is very difficult to see ourselves in the mirrot! (and I do not refer to diets)
Romania is already following USA trend!
Best regards,
Gabriela”

Efharisto for the nice words (not to say thanks all the time just in one language). I already commented regarding the mirror and me, a painful story… Sorry, I don’t believe that Romania has anything to do with USA. Let me give you couple of hints:
– In USA almost all people bought one apartment, many bought more for investment. So, in the last years they started selling to people without income, just to maintain the figures of all the system (banks, developers, other companies) high. In Romania almost everyone still lives in an old communistic block. Here all people want to buy a new home in the next 3 – 10 years (I don’t say they will succeed, but the need and the intention are the basis of a sale).
– In USA you were able to be granted with a bank loan almost anytime / very easily / very fast / for almost anything / without many questions. In Romania the banking system is not really the system that people know in western Europe and USA. Today, if you want a credit card on your company’s name (let’s say for a limit of just 3.000 euro), you should have strong profits, or eitherwise you should give to the bank an… asset (!) as guarantee! For housing loans, they get covered even more. And just a 30

– 40% of the population can have access to the banks today.
Please make the comparison (I can tell you much more but now its not the right time) and tell me that I am wrong.

Robintel Says:
“ I am Romanian and I find your words… well, true. ”

I am Greek and I find your words (and the words of all the people who sent to me comments) very important.

Marius Says:
“I hope that this happens in Romania as well, people should own only one house, and invest in other sectors of the economy , not fool around with fancy cars and buy a villa in neighbourhood with no plumbing at the price of a villa with seaside views in a developed country. A car or a real estate investment is the most stupid thing that romanians do. For goodness sake we don’t even have a highway, why the expensive cars?”

Marius, unfortunately I have to disagree with you. People don’t buy a car just for the highways. When they have the financial stability, it is also a good protection for them and (if they have the money, why not?) a pleasure of life, as our capitalistic world has taught us the last decades.
A Real Estate investment, all around the world, throughout the last 100 years, has proved to be the most profitable investment. Here we comment about investments in crazy, artificially pumped, prices. What sense does it make to purchase an apartment in Drumul Taberei with 2.700 euro, when this apartment is situated in a block built in 1961, the whole building is not renovated and the owner considers renovation just the new windows he placed there?
It would also be useful to remember that an apartment in Bucharest as the first residence of someone can not be compared with a vacation house, wherever in the world. No matter what the prices are, he lives here. What will he do? Stay there and come here to work every day?

Dragos Piper says:
“excellent review of both contries; lots of common sens and diplomacy in your language (open and honest as I had perceive it).
we (some friends and myself) have predicted this economy situation a couple of years ago; so I fully subscribe.
what you can not predict is the magnitude of the future Romanian economical crash; attention, this will have a general sens not only
the real estate one (market). I do think/believe the queke it is going to be much harmfull than the one in Greece.
however, I wanted to write only to thell you that you have gained my respect (NOT as economical analyst but as human being);
not too many Greeks can say this.

Best regards,
Dragos
Dragos, I feel honoured then. Please do not judge the Greeks based on what you see today in Romania. Unfortunately a serious part of them are not serious, but there are still many excellent members of the Greek community here, who make me proud of being a Greek today. (The same stands for the Romanians and all the rest of people, good and bad are everywhere).
Honestly, I do not expect a crash of the Romanian economy, I really don’t see how it can happen. Many people talk about the deficit. Well, if it would be this only, then half of European countries would be bankrupted by now, leading the economy with the biggest deficit of the world, USA. Romania has very good potential for the future. The exaggerations are a big problem indeed, but comparing Romania to many other E.U. countries, if the future governments just pay a small attention and the people be more careful, there is a highway waiting this country to drive in.
Regarding prices, I repeat, I expect (and it is necessary) a correction, which will wake up the people, making them more logical. The demand will continue being very strong, be sure about this as long as the rate of unemployment remains under 4%.

Aureliu Says:
I am from Romania…and MAN U R MORE THAN RIGHT…I COULD NOT WRITE IT ANY BETTER::
and because i have lived in GREECE as well i can say that we r the most impulsive people from the whole world..greek and romanian together..about the other things u have write there..u r right and i know many people in this field as well..i just wait that one day ..they will sell their cars and all …coz the real bússiness people start to arrive soon…untill then ..i al around the world looking from far away on a country that for the moment has no values!!!

Please, don’t be so bad with the people. I prefer them to wake up, than to see them destroyed, selling their cars. Ok, I know that most of them will be laughing with my words even the moment they will be losing all, but in the end this is human nature, we all make mistakes (me first), some of us make mistakes in one field, some in another.
I would be more than happy to see some of the people who exaggerate waking up and acting differently. Maybe it is unrealistic. But it worth, I believe that the common progress and wealth is the one which brings to each of us more wealth as well. This does not come by a communistic spreading of the money, but having a healthy strong economy, full of life and opportunities for the people. And Romania has the potential to come closer to this target.

Vacation – Books and “I became Romanian”… “You became Romanian” my mother commented after me complaining for the situation in several aspects of Greece.
